At Samarès School, we believe that positive behaviour is something that should be explicitly taught, modelled and practised, just like reading, writing and mathematics.

Our Behaviour Curriculum helps every child understand the behaviours, routines and social skills that enable them to succeed both in school and beyond. Rather than assuming children already know what is expected, we take the time to teach these skills directly, giving children the confidence and understanding they need to make positive choices, take responsibility and build strong relationships.

Our approach:

If we want children to consistently demonstrate positive behaviour, we need to teach them what that behaviour looks like.

This means moving from simply correcting behaviour when things go wrong to proactively teaching and practising the behaviours we want to see.

Our Behaviour Curriculum helps us to:

• create clear and consistent expectations across the school;
• use shared language when talking about behaviour;
• explicitly teach children what successful behaviour looks like;
• help children develop positive relationships and social skills;
• give children regular opportunities to practise positive behaviours;
• support children to make responsible choices; and
• create a positive, respectful environment where everyone is ready to learn.

What does our Behaviour Curriculum include?

Throughout the year, children take part in a sequence of short behaviour lessons, assemblies and classroom sessions. These provide regular opportunities to introduce, model, practise and revisit the behaviours that help our school community thrive.

Our Behaviour Curriculum teaches children the everyday behaviours and social skills they need to thrive at Samarès. This includes understanding our school values and expectations, managing emotions and making positive choices, following classroom and school routines, moving around school safely and respectfully, and behaving positively at playtimes and lunchtimes.

Children also learn important social and communication skills, such as using good manners, resolving disagreements, taking responsibility, showing respect, encouraging others and building positive relationships.

Through regular lessons, assemblies and opportunities to practise these skills, we help children understand not just what we expect, but how to demonstrate it in everyday situations.

A shared approach across the school

Our Behaviour Curriculum is designed to give children a shared understanding of what successful behaviour looks like. Lessons are delivered through assemblies and classroom sessions and use consistent language and expectations across the school.

This consistency is important. Children should experience the same clear expectations whether they are in their classroom, walking through the corridors, in assembly, at lunchtime or playing outside.

Our curriculum will also continue to develop. Just as we adapt our teaching curriculum in response to the needs of our pupils, we will refine our Behaviour Curriculum over time, responding to the behaviours and situations we see across the school.

Our focus

Our Behaviour Curriculum is part of our wider commitment to creating a positive behaviour culture at Samarès School.

Our focus is not simply on responding to behaviour when it goes wrong. Instead, we want to set children up for success by teaching them the behaviours we expect, modelling them clearly, giving children opportunities to practise and recognising them when they get it right.

By teaching behaviour explicitly and consistently, we aim to ensure that every child feels confident, respected, responsible and ready to learn - both at Samarès and beyond.
